WPIX, then an independent station, decided to take a chance with yet another rock ‘n’ roll show. Monday’s had a show, “Hollywood A Go-Go”, which was hosted by Sam Riddle. At 7:30 pm, Tuesday’s became a must see.

The show was done in color, (although not transmitted in color) had a group of teens, and had guests. I saw the Temptations, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Hollies, Charlie Rich (“Mohair Sam”), Chad & Jeremy, and many more.

This wasn’t just another dance show. Lloyd would have kids “lyp-snyching” to the hits of the day. However he would pause the song, and the kid would have to then sing the next line. One the most memorable “lyp-synch” segments was when a kid was lypping to “It’s Not Unusual” by Tom Jones. When the song paused, this kid not only sang the next line, but had a range that was as we used to say “out of sight”, Lloyd yelled out “Wow” and the studio went wild.

The other feature was when Lloyd would put dots and a line on his thumb and have his thumb sing to songs. What was great about this show was the audience was made up of kids from local schools and reflected what Los Angeles was really liked. You saw African-Americans, Asian-Americans, and Mexican Americans as part of the audience.

One of the segments that I enjoyed was the interviews Lloyd did. They weren’t the garden variety, he asked the guests questions that had some meat.

After the show had run it’s course, I had mor or less lost track of Lloyd, until one day while watching “Fight Back” w/David Horowitz, I was reading the credits at the end of the show and saw Lloyd’s name listed as producer.

Those were good times that I spent. It’s unfortunate that shows like this don’t exist today. If they did, perhaps we would all be a wee bit happier.Pedro Baeznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19402889.post-86283280370797527042008-10-11T02:15:00.000-07:002008-10-11T02:15:00.000-07:00Goodbye Lloyd.
